Saturday 28th April @ Old School Lane

Pegasus Juniors entertained Darlaston in their final home West Midland (Regional) League – Premier Division fixture of the season at Old School Lane, Hereford. They were seeking to reverse a defeat earlier in the season at the City Ground.

Pegasus Juniors scored first after ten minutes with the visitors replying with a dubious penalty shortly afterwards. Two goals in the final fifteen minutes of the half secured the victory. In the tenth minute of the game, Keith Jones gained possession in midfield, Paul Allam sprayed the ball out to the left for Cory Hyde, he turned his marker before sending a looping shot into the top far corner of the goal.

Eight minutes later, Joe Lemar was adjudged to have tripped Kevin Monchew inside the penalty area. Flaview Chambourd scored from twelve yards. A speculative shot from twenty five yards by Sam Harrison forced a fine one handed save from the visiting goalkeeper Andy Aston.

On the half hour mark the home side were awarded a free kick on the right, Harrison floated the ball to the far post where Mark Davies rose salmon like to head the ball across the face of goal where Allam calmly guided the ball into the goal.

Two minutes before the break, Adam Bendall found Hyde with a defence splitting pass, the striker fired from the edge of the penalty area, Aston made a good save but, was unable to hold onto to the ball. Like a flash, Jimmy Moreton raced in to prod the ball home from close range.

Three minutes after the resumption, the tricky Monchew escaped forcing a block by Mikel Corbisier, the ball to Lumumba Boniface who was denied by a fine fingertip save by the home goal minder. The home side remained in control against a skilful Darlaston team that played some of the best football by a visiting side at Old School Lane yet, they lacked the decisive pass at crucial times.

Aston was forced to make important save from Ashley Weston and Allam as the home side pressed to increase the score line.

On Saturday 5th May, 2012, Pegasus Juniors FC travel to Wednesfield to play their last fixture of the season in the West Midland (Regional) League – Premier Division, kick off 3.00pm.

Saturday 21st April @ The Butler Sports Ground, Wem

Pegasus Juniors travelled to the Butler Sports ground, Wem seeking to reverse a two goal defeat in January, in the West Midland (Regional) League – Premier Division. A goalless first period was probably a fair reflection of the play but, both sides failed to capitalise on the goal scoring opportunities created. Heavy rain for most of the half made for difficult ball control as the bar of soap was difficult to control. Shortly after the restart, the home scored from a corner kick situation, yet despite much pressure it appeared as if the visitors were going to go home empty handed. Step up, Keith Jones to score direct from a free kick in stoppage time!

Eight minutes into the game Pegasus Juniors had the ball in the United net when Paul Allam and Will Loughman combined for Ross Powell to fire home left footed from twenty yards, only to have it ruled out due to an offside decision earlier in the move.

Shawbury clawed themselves back into the game and only three good saves by Mikel Corbisier prevented them going ahead, however, in added time of the first half Allam raced clear forcing keeper Jay Nash to make a fine save as he dive full length to push the ball onto the upright.

Four minutes into the half a Jimmy Moreton free kick was punched clear by Nash but, only as far as Allam, his goal bound shot was deflected for a corner kick. In the fifty third minute, Pegasus Juniors conceded a free kick that was tipped over the bar by Corbisier. The resultant corner kick evaded all heads of the jumping players and was bundled into the goal by Liam Dunphy.

In the sixty ninth minute, Allam raced into the opposition penalty area, he beat one defender before passing to the unmarked Paul Jenkins, who with Nash out of position pulled his shot wide.

Pegasus had the lion’s share of the possession without seriously testing Nash. With the final whistle in the mouth of referee Hanna, Moreton raced towards the goal line only to be needlessly fouled by Harry Murphy, Jones calmly curled the ball over the line into the goal before it was cleared, the assistant referee indicated a goal, much to the consternation of the home players and supporters. The “Fat Lady” soon began to sing!

This was not a pretty game but, both sides battled hard and produced some attractive football in the difficult conditions.

On Saturday, 28th April, 2012, Pegasus Juniors entertain Darlaston FC in the last home West Midland (Regional) League – Premier Division fixture of the season at Old School Lane, Hereford, kick off 3.00pm.

Sunday 1st April @ Malvern Town

Pegasus Ladies 2nd team secured their second silverware in a week when they beat Droitwich Ladies 3 nil at Malvern Town on Sunday in the Hereford and Worcester League Cup final. Have they been presented with the league winners cup? NO The team made up mainly of teenagers have had a fantastic first season in senior football and provided an excellent pathway for players to move into the ladies first team.

The game on Sunday kicked off in glorious sunshine in front of a crowd of over 150. Pegasus were first on the attack and in several early raids Nichola Wheadon was only just off target with terrific shots. She got even closer next when her cross hit the inside of the post and was scrambled clear. The pressure finally told midway through the half when Lucy Belcher hit a speculative shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards. Pegasus continued to dominant the game and shots from captain Becky Gummery were cleared off the line after the Droitwich keeper made two great saves. However the continued pressure told when young Rhiannon Jones, who joined the club this season from Welsh club Mardy Tigers, raced through the heart of the defence to fire an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.

Little was seen of the Droitwich attack but when the did break away they were competently dealt with by Sophie Probert, Ellie Bishop, Chloe Volpe, Lauren Gough and Ashleigh Nicholls leaving keeper Kate Brisland a mere spectator for large parts of the half. On the stroke of half time a fine move saw Sarah Bishop burst clear but her shot hit the outside of the post.

In the second half Droitwich tried hard to get back into the game and Brisland was forced to race off her line to clear the danger. But it was always the Pegasus Ladies who looked likely to score and a Julie Nicholas ball THROUGH TO Emily Lewis saw the youngest PLAYER beat two playerS before firing her shot into the bottom corner. In the middle of the park Tilly Salmon, with boundless energy, and Heather Troth caused constant problems and Courtney Bowkett lead the attack. Despite the hot conditions the use of roll-on/off substitutions was a great benefit and enabled a high tempo game to be played. A fine example of ladies football played infront of an appreciative crowd.

Final score; 3-0

Goals; Lucy Belcher, Rhiannon Jones and Emily Lewis.

Saturday 31st March 3pm @ Old School Lane

Pegasus Juniors entertained Shifnal Town in a West Midland (Regional) League – Premier Division fixture, at Old School Lane, Hereford, seeking to return to winning ways after two one nil defeats on the road. The previous game at Phoenix Park, ended in all square with a goal apiece, with a little bit of luck Pegasus could have won the game. This game was settled between the two captains just after the hour mark, Tom Griffin handled the ball in the penalty area and Paul Allam converted the penalty kick.

Pegasus Juniors were first to test the opposition goalkeeper when Paul Jenkins received a pass from Ross Powell, then unleashed a shot that was too hot for Mark Bissell was unable to handle at the first attempt. The home side were contained by Shifnal but goal scoring opportunities were at a premium. There was an interesting contest in midfield where the diminutive Sam Harrison was up against Louis Jones a giant of a man. Harrison will claim victory as the Town player was moved to centre back.

Twenty one minutes elapsed before Shifnal threatened the home goal but, Jones from twenty yards fired narrowly wide. Eight minutes later, Pegasus Will Loughman received the ball from James Cartwright, he returned the ball to the full back as he made an overlapping run to the corner flag before crossing the ball to Keith Jones who headed the ball onto the roof of the net.

H|T 1 – 0

The first action of the second half saw Keith Jones make a run down the left to the bye line, he crossed the ball to Loughman who was tackled as he shot at goal. Pat Ellis in the visiting defence was caught in possession by Loughman but, he pulled his shot across the face of goal. The visitors nearly caught Pegasus on the counter attack, a cross from the left was cleared but, only to Louis Jones, his shot through a crowded defence forced a fine save at the expense of a corner kick from Mikel Corbisier.

In the sixty fourth minute, Jimmy Moreton beat his marker, his pass towards the penalty spot was needlessly handled by Griffin. Allam coolly rolled the ball into the net having sent Bissell the wrong way. Two minutes later, Keith Jones side footed the ball into the goal, from a Moreton pass, only to have it cancelled out by an offside decision that did not please the home supporters.

Pegasus controlled the game but, despite the amount of possession they were unable to force Bissell to make other than standard catches, at the other end Shifnal were restrained by a solid defence of Allam and Lee Mussell assisted by full backs Toby Lowther and Cartwright both of whom were gaining in confidence from recent performances. This was a workman like Pegasus performance built on a solid defence protecting Corbisier who was only required to make regulation saves.

Saturday 23rd March 2012

Pegasus Juniors travelled for a West Midland (Regional) League – Premier Division, game seeking to build on the recent upturn in form and stop the title chase by the second placed team. A dubious penalty decision again the run of play was all that separated the teams as the visitors continued to display the recent good performances. This has coincided with the arrival of Mikael Corbisier. He commands the penalty area, his superb shot stopping and handling are excellent.

He was called into action very early on when he made a fine save from Marvin Nisbett who had linked with his fellow striker Callum Martin. In the nineteenth minute Sam Harrison won the ball in midfield, he played a through ball over the top of the square Gornal defence; Keith Jones ran onto the pass and lobbed the ball over the head of the advancing James Pemberton. The ball on target bounced onto the crossbar for a goal kick.

Pegasus were having the greater share of the play with the home side looking very shaky in defence. In the thirty third minute of the half, Jimmy Moreton was about to clear the ball out of the penalty area Chris Waterhouse stooped to head the ball, his chest hit the leg of Moreton. The referee awarded a penalty kick. This was converted by Connor Gater.

Needless to say this changed the game, the home side with a partisan crowd started to play with a little more confidence as the visitors struggled to contain them. The second half was an even contest with the title contenders probably shading possession and forcing Corbisier to make a number of fine saves.

Plenty of action was to follow without any serious threat on either goal.

Pegasus Juniors entertained second placed team Gornal Athletic in a West Midland (Regional) League – Premier Division fixture, at Old School Lane, Hereford. The home side gave a good account of themselves for the first hour, scoring first then being pegged back around the half hour mark. The turning point was a missed penalty kick early in the second period, the home side were visibly deflated and conceded goals.

Straight from the kick off Pegasus Juniors took the game to the opposition and opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the game. A through ball from Keith Jones picked out Cory Hyde who managed to pin point accuracy roll the ball past James Pemberton. Jones was again the provider when he crossed the ball to Hyde but, the striker struggled to control the ball on his chest and the ball bounced away to Pemberton. From the clearance Matt Martin crossed the ball to the head of Mark Swann, Mark Davies did well to head the ball to safety off the goal line. The strong Gornal was causing problems but was forced to shoot from outside the penalty area.

Swann forced a fine diving save from Jon Pugh as he managed to get in a shot despite the challenge from James Cartwright. In the thirty first minute Swann was fortunate to be awarded a penalty following an innocuous challenge from Davies. Chris Waterhouse scored from the penalty kick to level the scores.

Two minutes into the second period the home side were awarded a free kick, taken by Jones, the ball fell kindly to Ross Powell who smashed the ball towards goal bringing a fine save from Pemberton at the foot of his goal post. From the resultant corner kick Davies headed the ball but, it was cleared off the line, he hit the clearance on the volley that grazed the outside of the post. Two minutes later, Pegasus were awarded a penalty kick when Pete Wood clearly handled the ball inside the penalty area. The kick by Jones was saved by Pemberton diving to his right.

That changed the game, Gornal were on a high and the Redmen were deflated. In the space of four minutes after the hour mark Gornal scored three goals from Waterhouse (2) and Marvin Nisbett. The final goal by Lee Wharton was scored in the dying minutes of the game.

Pegasus under 18s entertained Romulus under 18s at Old School Lane, Hereford, in the Midland Junior Premier League. This was expected to be a tough game for the home side as Romulus from Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, had an unbeaten record, winning fourteen and drawing one of their games. Romulus had a strong start to the game but, without really causing many problems, however, Pegasus took the lead in the nineteenth minute through Tom Parry. The scores were levelled five minutes later.

Pegasus went ahead with another Tom Parry goal just before the interval.

H|T 2 – 1

Pegasus went on to produce a very solid performance dominating in defence and midfield, allowing Parry to score two more goals. Although Tom Parry will grab the head lines this could not have been possible without the efforts of all team mates in creating the goal scoring opportunities. Manager Shaun Harris said after the game, “This result was a team performance, following their hard work not only in here today but, on the training pitch.”

On Saturday, 10th March, 2012, Pegasus Juniors entertain Austrey Rangers at Old School Lane, Hereford for a Midlands Junior Premier League fixture, kick off 10:30am.

Saturday 3rd March at Old School Lane

Pegasus Juniors entertained Stafford Town in a West Midland (Regional) League – Premier Division fixture, at Old School Lane, Hereford, hoping to improve on a dour goalless performance at Evans Park in January. The team were aware that a win here would leapfrog them above the visitors. A lively first half saw both sides create and squander goal scoring opportunities; a goal ten minutes into the second half by the home side was enough to secure the points. The “Peggy Boys” had the lion’s share of the game yet; man of the match was new signing Mikael Corbisier, a goalkeeper who played his last games in Italy. He made a string of excellent saves; he was quick in his movement around the penalty area plus first class distribution of the ball.

This game was much brighter than the first meeting of these two sides with fast flowing football as Pegasus shaded the opening minutes but, it was Stafford who first tested a goalkeeper when Matt Buckham found space with only Corbisier to beat. His shot was parried by the home Gloveman who made a swift recovery to deny the striker a second opportunity. Zac Brimble forced a fine save from Karl Smith at the other end with a header from a Keith Jones cross. As the home side continued to press Will Loughman beat his marker and crossed the ball to Cory Hyde who flashed his header wide of the goal post.

James Cartwright and Corbisier combined to snub a threat when Morgan Hurley broke free. On the half hour mark Toby Lowther and Sam Harrison linked allowing Hyde to fire from twenty yards a speculative shot into the side netting. An interesting contest was emerging with Harrison and Wayne Bailey constantly in the thick of the midfield action.

H|T 0 – 0

Six minutes into the second period the visitors were awarded free kick on the edge of the penalty area, this was superbly pushed away for a corner kick by Corbisier. In the fifty first minute Pegasus Juniors scored in unusual circumstances, keeper Smith made a regulation save, he made a poor kick from hand straight to Paul Allam; he lobbed the ball over the Town defence into the path of Hyde who lobbed the ball over the head of the advancing keeper. Pegasus continued pushing forward and Harrison and Hyde linked for Loughman who fired a shot wide of the goal. Allam forced a fine save from Smith from a Cartwright centre.

The visitors clawed themselves back into the game with Corbisier making fine saves at the expense of a corner kick from Hurley and John Kirby. Jones for the home side put the ball in the net from a swift counter attacking move involving Paul Jenkins, Harrison and Hyde but, controversially this was disallowed for offside. From the free kick, Kirby raced through the Pegasus defence, Corbisier again came to the rescue as he pushed the ball away allowing Lowther to clear. Mark Davies headed the ball into the net from a free kick only to have it disallowed by a dubious offside decision.

This was a good performance by the “Redmen” who will need to be more clinical in front of goal and tighter in defence if, they are to continue the improved displays produced in recent games.
